This picks a new name for you, preserving the number of names as well as their first letter. I wanted to pick surnames as well, but the file of names was too large.
These names are the most common names reported in the 1990 U.S. Census. Due to the greater variety in female names, there are more in the database, so if you select "either" you are about three times more likely to get a female name as a male name.
There are 5825 names in total. Of these, there are 4275 female names, 1219 male names, and 331 names which appeared in both lists.
Why did I do this? Mostly because I was bored. The inspiration was probably a friend who started signing his email with made-up names which matched his initials, a different one each time. To help him out, I wrote this program.
